EnviroScience Achieves Historic ODOT Milestone

We are thrilled to announce that EnviroScience has achieved a significant milestone in environmental restoration with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The Interagency Review Team (IRT), a panel comprised of representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the Ohio EPA (OHEPA), and other federal and state agencies, has officially approved the release of 6.0 Category 3 wetland credits at ODOT’s Mud Lake Wetland Mitigation Bank in Medina County.

EnviroScience's Ecological Restoration Team Surveys the Land for ODOT's First Wetland Mitigation Bank

This project marks the first time in ODOT’s history that a wetland mitigation bank has been established. A wetland mitigation bank is a site where wetlands are restored, created, or preserved to compensate for unavoidable impacts to wetlands in other areas, ensuring that these critical ecosystems are protected for future generations.

EnviroScience was honored to lead the design-build team for this groundbreaking project. Our team began by scouring multiple potential sites, ultimately selecting a parcel owned by the Medina County Park District. While the site, previously used for agriculture, held immense potential for restoration, it also posed several challenges. The presence of railroad tracks, a gas line easement, and access road issues required innovative solutions.

Our experts conducted extensive site investigations, including wetland delineations (to map out existing wetlands), soil surveys, and groundwater assessments. We also delved into the history of the land with a title search and gathered data from similar ecological sites for reference. Once the ideal site was confirmed, EnviroScience took charge of the comprehensive design process, prepared the initial project prospectus, and expertly guided the project through the rigorous IRT review process.

Construction of the Mud Lake Wetland Mitigation Bank was completed in 2024, and the site is now in its first year of post-construction monitoring. This means we’re carefully tracking the progress of the newly restored wetlands to ensure they develop into thriving ecosystems that meet regulatory standards.

This achievement is a testament to our team’s expertise and commitment to environmental stewardship. We are proud to have set a precedent with ODOT’s first-ever wetland mitigation bank and look forward to continuing our work in restoring and preserving Ohio’s valuable wetland resources.

Strengthening Environmental Compliance with Toxicity Testing

The toxicity certification covers Acute and Chronic Toxicity Testing using Ceriodaphnia dubia (water flea) and Pimephales promelas (fathead minnow). These species are essential indicators of water quality, particularly in Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing, which is crucial for evaluating the potential impact of industrial and municipal discharges on aquatic life.

WET testing is mandated by both state and federal regulations to ensure that discharges into water bodies do not harm aquatic organisms. With our new accreditation, EnviroScience is now authorized to conduct these tests in North Carolina, helping clients across various industries comply with the Clean Water Act and state-specific water quality standards. This certification enables us to bring our extensive experience in WET testing to a new region, supporting our clients in maintaining compliance while protecting North Carolina’s valuable water resources.

Achieving this certification was a rigorous process, requiring a full laboratory audit and the adaptation of our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to align with North Carolina’s specific regulatory requirements. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our Laboratory Technical Supervisor, Alex Tite, who led the effort with invaluable support from laboratory technicians Madelyn Johns, Katie Beitko, and the entire ES laboratory staff.

Advancing Ecosystem Health with Benthic Macroinvertebrate Surveys

In addition to toxicity testing, EnviroScience also received certification to conduct Benthic Macroinvertebrate Aquatic Population Surveys across all ecoregions of North Carolina. Benthic macroinvertebrates, such as insects, crustaceans, and worms, are vital indicators of stream and river health, as they are sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat conditions.

This certification allows ES to provide comprehensive benthic assessments, often required for environmental impact studies, restoration projects, and long-term ecological monitoring. Our team can now collect and identify benthic samples statewide, offering insights into the biological health of aquatic ecosystems and assisting clients in understanding the effects of their projects on local waterways.

Congratulations to macroinvertebrate taxonomists Abbie Clasgens and Maddie Genco and Senior Scientist Eric Romaniszyn on achieving certification for field collection and to Abbie, Maddie, and Senior Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist Rhonda Mendel for their expertise in sample identification. Maddie Genco, ES’s technical lead for all macroinvertebrate sampling, will oversee identification, quality assurance, and laboratory efforts to ensure the highest data integrity and accuracy standards. Eric Romaniszyn, based in our North Carolina regional office, will coordinate collection activities, leveraging his deep knowledge of the region’s ecosystems.

New USEPA Recommendations Combat PFAS in Freshwater Fish

EnviroScience Biologist Collects Brooke Trout in Electrofishing Survey

On July 11, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) took a significant step in the ongoing battle against environmental contaminants by issuing updated recommendations under the Clean Water Act. These recommendations include the addition of several per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) to the list of contaminants that states, Tribes, and territories should monitor in locally caught, freshwater fish. This landmark move is part of Administrator Regan’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap, aimed at protecting communities from these persistent “forever chemicals.”

Understanding the New Recommendations

EnviroScience Aquatic Biologist and Algal Taxonomist Brad Bartelme at the Microscope

The updated USEPA recommendations call for monitoring twelve PFAS analytes alongside other harmful contaminants such as lead, three cyanotoxins, a flame retardant, and amphetamine. This initiative underscores the agency’s commitment to advancing the science of PFAS and safeguarding public health. “By considering the latest science in their local advisories and testing for PFAS in fish at a local level, states and Tribes can protect subsistence, recreational, and sport fishers,” said USEPA Acting Assistant Administrator for Water Bruno Pigott.

State, Tribal, and territorial programs do have monitoring programs for waterbodies found within their jurisdiction and often rely on USEPA’s guidelines to determine which contaminants to monitor. The USEPA lists 16 states that currently monitor and have established fish consumption advisories for selected PFAS analytes. The updated recommendations reflect a thorough review of scientific literature, data analysis, and external peer review. They aim to provide a robust framework for issuing fish consumption advisories, ensuring that the latest scientific insights inform public health decisions.

The Impact on Local Communities

PFAS, known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks, have been detected in freshwater fish across various studies, including USEPA’s National Aquatic Resource Survey (NARS). However, these studies highlight the need for localized data to make informed public health decisions.

With the new USEPA recommendations, it is crucial for states, Tribes, and territories to enhance their monitoring efforts to protect subsistence fishing, recreational fishing, and communities that rely on locally caught fish. The USEPA advises individuals to consult their local authorities for information on the safe consumption of freshwater fish and shellfish.

Our Commitment to PFAS Management

EnviroScience is at the forefront of environmental consulting, offering comprehensive PFAS services to help clients navigate the complexities of PFAS contamination. Our expertise in environmental compliance, sampling, and analysis capabilities position us as a trusted partner for states, Tribes, and territories implementing the USEPA’s new recommendations.

The Ecological Restoration of Fox Creek

EnviroScience is proud to announce the completion of a restoration project at Fox Creek, an essential tributary to the Middle Fork Sugar Creek and Tuscarawas River watershed. This project, undertaken in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, highlights our commitment to restoring and preserving critical natural habitats.

Project Overview

Fox Creek, located on the property of The Wilderness Center, was previously adjacent to farmland and included a small stream and wetlands in desperate need of improvement. Historically, the stream had been “ditched” to prevent flooding on the farmland, which involved creating a deeper, straighter channel. While effective for flood prevention, this practice significantly disconnects the stream from its floodplain, removes its natural variability, and hastens its flow. Adjacent historically wetland areas were drained by clay tile into Fox Creek.

EnviroScience's Restoration Project at Fox Creek in Partnership with the Nature Conservancy

Restoration Efforts

Our ecological restoration team at EnviroScience took significant steps to rejuvenate this vital waterway:

EnviroScience Ecological Restoration Team Tackles Fox CreekStream Reconnection
We reconnected the stream to its floodplain and expanded the existing wetlands. Restoring the stream’s natural meander allowed it to wind through the property, slowing the flow and creating a more natural habitat.

Hydrologic Enhancement
The reconnection of the stream and removal of the wetland tile drainage restored the area’s natural hydrology, allowing drained hydric soils to rehydrate and develop wetland communities once again.

Habitat Enhancement
Rocks and logs were strategically placed to add habitat variability within the channel. These features now play a crucial role in supporting the return of native species.

Invasive Species Management
Invasive species were removed from the wetland area and replaced with native plants. This effort has been instrumental in reestablishing the local food chain and promoting biodiversity.

Project Impact

The restoration has had remarkable results:

EnviroScience Ecological Restoration Team Tackles Fox CreekBiodiversity
The wetland and stream are now flourishing with new life. Seedlings from adjacent habitats are establishing themselves, and frogs and salamanders have begun to lay eggs in the restored environment.

Water Quality
The restored wetland is a natural filter for pollutants, significantly improving the watershed’s overall health.

This restoration project showcases our ability to collaborate with partners like The Nature Conservancy to achieve significant environmental benefits. By reconnecting Fox Creek to its natural floodplain and enhancing its habitat, we have laid the groundwork for a thriving ecosystem that will benefit both wildlife and the local community.
