Brian Carlson Adds Candy Darter to Federal Recovery Permit

Congratulations to EnviroScience Aquatic Ecologist Brian Carlson, who has just added the Candy Darter (Etheostoma osburni) as an authorized species to his federal recovery permit. The Candy Darter has a very small range; it is only known from West Virginia and Virginia’s Upper Kanawha River Basin, which is synonymous with the Gauley and Greater New River watersheds.

Brian was already permitted for a wide range of freshwater mussels, as well as the federally endangered Guyandotte River crayfish and federally threatened Big Sandy crayfish. During off-season winter months, Brian prefers identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates using his SFS EPT East & North American Chironomidae certifications.
